Boss, why did you dump me?

 Freight forwarder Popular Science (Special)

In 2021, Lucky really saw one news after another. The phenomenon of "container dumping", which is a headache for countless freight forwarders, happens frequently in the period of extremely busy logistics.

When it comes to the occurrence of "container dumping", Lucky himself has a deep understanding that once it is not handled properly, it will not only affect the arrival time of customers' goods, but also affect the relationship with customers.

I followed a ticket of goods to North America before, and the shipping company was informed to dump the containers at the weekend. The goods originally cut in four and split in two were simply towed to the next voyage for transportation. The customer kept urging us, and we had no choice but to communicate with the agent. Fortunately, the matter was finally resolved successfully, which did not affect the customer.

So what does it mean to dump the cabinet?

Container dumping is a very popular term in import and export, marine logistics and other industries. In the peak shipping season, due to the large cargo volume and limited shipping space, shipping companies began to confirm that more than 120% of the cargo with full load can be transported on time to ensure that the ship can be fully loaded. However, once there is insufficient space, that is, the so-called "burst" in the shipping industry, the shipping company will refuse to ship more than 20% of the cargoes of the shippers with low freight rates and ordinary relationships to the shippers, and will delay the cargoes to the next voyage or several voyages, for which the shipping company is not responsible.

"Cabinet dumping" is a common saying in the foreign trade industry

"Container" means container, that is, container.

It mainly refers to sea containers,

Including full container and LCL.

Freight forwarders usually refer to this phenomenon as:

The cabinet was thrown to the next boat by the boatman.

     Knowledge points

Next water vessel=next cargo vessel

The shipping space of this ship was originally booked. When the container was declared and released for boarding, the shipping company informed you that your cabinet was not loaded on this ship, and it could not be loaded until the next week's ship.

There are relatively few LCL cabinets

Because LCL freight forwarders are generally strong and have a good relationship with shipping companies, and LCL involves multiple customers and multiple bills of cargo, which has a great impact, LCL freight forwarders will try every way to avoid container dumping. Unless they catch up with Shanghai Customs for inspection, they can't catch up with the ship, so they can only postpone the next voyage.

In fact, postponing the ship is not equal to dumping the container

Container dumping means that you have no problem in all aspects and can catch up with the ship completely. However, due to the unilateral reason of the shipping company (the number of spaces placed is more than the actual number of spaces), the cabin is burst and there is no space, so you directly dump your cabinet. However, the delay is usually due to the reason of the freight forwarder or shipper, which is really behind schedule, so it has to be postponed to the next voyage.

Question: Why was the cabinet dumped???

In the peak freight season, the cargo volume is large, and the shipping company's space is limited, so it is easy to burst (especially on popular routes), and inevitably some cabinets will be dumped. (In fact, it is the shipping company's reason to dump the container, because in order to ensure full load, the shipping company does not waste any space, and the number of spaces released is often more than the actual number of spaces.)

for instance:

There were only 100 spaces allocated to this port by the shipping company, but the shipping company released 110 spaces to the freight forwarder or the owner of the cargo. By then, the cabinets of the additional 10 spaces could not be fully loaded, so they had to be dumped and postponed to the next ship.

There may be less than 10 cabins left in the end. Because of the 110 spaces reserved in advance, some may be withdrawn, some may not catch up with the ship, some may not leave due to customs problems, or some may not leave for other reasons, so there may be five or six eventually dumped. Of course, there may be less than 100 people who can walk in the end, and more than 10 people who have withdrawn their cabins or failed to catch up.

What to do after the cabinet is dumped?

Extension

It means that the goods have entered the port and been declared for customs clearance, and the container is dumped by the shipping company when loading, so there is no need to declare and apply for inspection separately, because this is the container that has been released by the customs, and the shipping company will arrange to board another ship or postpone the shipment to the next voyage, and there is no need to declare for the second time in the middle. This is the so-called "extension", also known as "missing installation".

Re application for customs clearance

However, if the missing shipment cannot be applied to the shipping company, or the customs does not agree to the missing shipment due to other reasons, the shipper must go through the customs clearance formalities with the new shipping space confirmation of the shipping company and the new ship name, voyage number, bill of lading number, and entrust the fleet to go to the shipping agent/shipping company to handle the case transfer and allocation, and pay the relevant fees (the case transfer fee and the operation fee). Modification requires deletion and re reporting.

The direct victims of container dumping are shippers, cargo owners and freight forwarders, who may cause delay in delivery, secondary customs declaration or commodity inspection, or even lose their customers.

In the final analysis, the phenomenon of container dumping is the problem of interests, which is caused by the shipping company's pursuit of maximizing its profits. However, the shipping company, while pursuing profits, has left the word "service" behind. As a result, the shippers have been scolded. What the shipping company finally loses is its own reputation and long-term interests.

Cabinet rejection happens frequently, so it is the absolute principle to plan in advance
